Rom-Com Beat Sheet
The rom-com beat sheet is the genre's load-bearing structure — meet-cute, initial resistance, deepening, first declaration, breakup (the "dark moment"), grand gesture, together. Break one beat at your peril; audiences feel the missing ones.
Every romantic comedy, romantic drama, and love-story subplot. Also useful as a diagnostic — if your rom-com feels flat, check which of the seven beats you skipped.
The beats
- 1Setup
Introduce the protagonist and their romantic flaw or belief.
- 2Meet Cute
The love interests collide in a memorable, specific way.
- 3Adhesion
Something forces them to keep interacting.
- 4No Way, Yes Way
Initial rejection softens — attraction grows.
- 5Midpoint
A declaration or a false high — they commit.
- 6Complications
The flaw surfaces; secrets come out.
- 7Breakup
The relationship collapses — the low point.
- 8Dark Night
The protagonist learns what love actually requires.
- 9Grand Gesture
The protagonist acts — publicly or dramatically — to win love back.
- 10Happily Ever After
A closing image showing the new union.
How to use it
Write the dark moment first. It's the only beat audiences won't accept being weak. The meet-cute can be quiet, the declaration can be a glance — but the third-act breakup has to hurt, and the grand gesture has to cost the character something.
Example
Meet-cute: the drive from Chicago. Resistance: years apart, 'men and women can't be friends.' Deepening: the New Year parties, phone calls, Casablanca. First declaration: Harry's speech on New Year's Eve. Dark moment: Harry leaves Sally's bed the morning after. Grand gesture: Harry running through the streets to the party. Together: the proposal.
Common pitfalls
- Meet-cutes that aren't specific. Generic meet-cutes are worse than no meet-cute.
- A breakup over a misunderstanding. The dark moment must be earned by character, not by missed text.
- A grand gesture that costs nothing. The gesture proves change — if it's free, the change isn't real.
